Two separate explosions were reported in Saudi Arabia on 4 July; one in the eastern city of Qatif and one in the western city of Medina.
In Qatif, one or possibly two explosions were reported near the Shiite Muslim Faraj al-Omran mosque in the downtown area of the city. The only reported casualty to date is a suspected suicide bomber.
In Medina, a suspected suicide bomber detonated near a security post in the vicinity of the Al-Masjid an-Nabawi or the Prophet’s Mosque. Latest reports indicate that a number of security force personnel are among the casualties.
The two incidents follow hours after an explosion in Jeddah near the US Consulate-General. An assailant reportedly detonated explosives in a vehicle, killing himself and wounding two security personnel.
