Their message directly contradicted the deputy home affairs minister, who said on May 9 that the 2012 ward or village-tract administration law will not be amended.

Answering a question raised by an MP on “good governance”, the deputy home affairs minister Major General Aung Soe told parliamentarians the law was drafted and approved on the suggestions of a number of organisations including those at the Union level and the presidential legal advisory team.

Several organisations calling for the overhaul acted as observers in this year’s January election of local administrative officials as well as last year’s general election, including Paungku, New Myanmar Foundation, Action Committee for Democracy Development, Charity-Oriented Myanmar and Equality Myanmar.
